Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com Review Branching out from its already successful cookware line, Anolon's Advanced collection features high-grade materials with substantial weight. This 8-piece set packs all the essentials including: an 8-inch chef knife, a 3-1/2-inch parer, a 9-inch bread knife, a 5-inch serrated utility knife, and a 6-inch utility knife. A 10-inch sharpener is included for daily honing and polishing the knife blades. The set also offers a pair of forged kitchen shears for cutting poultry or string. All pieces fit into a handsome bamboo block with labeled slots for each knife in the set and a few extra unlabeled slots for additions. Though the serrated blades (bread and utility knives) produce nice clean cuts, the other cutlery is slightly dull right out of the box. Immediate sharpening on a fine steel is recommended before using these knives to bring their edges to a sharper and safer angle for exact and injury-free cutting. Advanced Collection knives feature blades forged from high-quality German carbon steel that resists rust and food stains. The stainless steel is ice-hardened for additional strength and longer edge retention. Blades are then polished with glass to produce an edge that is meant to be simultaneously sharp but smoother to the touch. Full tangs and counter balance caps provide superior balance, while rounded blade spines add more comfort during extended periods of prepping. Ergonomically-shaped handles with cushioned non-slip Santoprene padding offer a secure, comfortable grip--even when cutting with wet hands. Anolon guarantees this cutlery under a lifetime limited warranty and, for proper maintenance, recommends hand washing and immediately drying knives. --Cristina Vaamonde What's in the Box 5-inch serrated utility knife, 8-inch chef knife, 9-inch bread knife, 6-inch utility knife, 3-1/2-inch parer, 10-inch sharpener, forged kitchen shears, bamboo block

Review #1: Good blades, but the rest has issues 2007-03-23 Got the knives today. As expected from other reviews on Amazon, the metal labels on the wooden box are corroded, but not too much to return the item. The knives say they are made in China, though they also say the steel is German. Maybe they are assembled in China - the rubber on the handles must be from China. The handles feel good to touch, but are "unpolished" in places-- the rubber wears out there, i.e. loses small pieces when you rub the handle with your palm. Its soft, so no blisters can develop on your hands. These blemishes are actually minor, again, not sufficient to return the product. I guess the handles will wear out from ordinary wear and tear long before the blades do.
Review #2: Quality Knife 2007-03-23 If you want good quality along with good price, this set of knives gives you the answer. They are sharp, sturdy and very comfortable. I just love them.
Review #3: Very Good Set of inexpensive knives 2007-03-13 I just got these knives for $50 via a one day amazon sale and I'm estatic about the quality. Even for their normaly price of $100 they are a good buy, as they are solid, sharp, comfortable and cut great. These are by far the best of the "affordable" knives I've ever used and are up there in quality with many of the less affordable ones. Yes, they are made in China, but the workmanship seems top notch to my eye.
Review #4: Nice Knives but knife knife block's labels are corroded 2007-03-12 I recently ordered this item and was a a little disappointed in the condition of the knife block(the metal labels were worn and tarnished with black.) I tried cleaning them with no luck. However, I loved the knives so I ordered a replacement thinking it was just a defective knife block but to my dismay I received one with the block even worse off(more corrosion and black). I sent the replacement back and kept the first one. I am bummed I had paid $100 for something that wasn't in good condition but I really love the knives so I guess I am keeping it.
Review #5: Great knives that look great! 2007-03-09 I was looking to purchase a real set of knives for the longest time, but I had some serious "sticker-shock" at the prices of forged knife sets. These knives are a fantastic value for being full-tang, forged knives. They are sharp, feel fantastic in your hand -- well-balanced and solid, and look attractive sitting on my countertop.
The bamboo knife block looks great -- it totally matches my other bamboo kitchen accessories, plus bamboo is durable and has some antiseptic properties. The block has little labels for the slots of the knives that come with the set. The extra knife slots have labels but they are left blank.
The variety of knives that comes with the set is pretty good. I purchased the matching 7" santoku from open stock because I wanted something smaller than the chef knife, but a bit more heavy than the utility knife. I've used every knife in the set at some point since getting it 2 weeks ago, and they all perform beautifully. I may get a parer and/or boning knife soon, just to have them and fill up all the block slots. ;)
The santoprene (silicon) handles are very comfortable and slip-resistant. Even when washing the knives, I am able to keep a solid grip on them.
I wish they were dishwasher safe, but really any good knives you'll want to wash by hand anyway. I love these knives so much, I find that I actually enjoy babying them!
If you're looking for a quality knife set but don't want to spend hundreds of dollars, I definitely recommend these. You won't believe how much of a difference a set of solid, sharp knives will make! |
